This $15.5 million project consists of a complete re-organization of the two project sites including existing facilities. The existing Mission Leisure Centre was completely re-sited, renovated, and expanded. The new program includes a new leisure swimming pool, change rooms, water slide, NHL arena, team rooms, a small gymnasium, multi-purpose meeting rooms, and a fitness centre. The reconfigured and renovated spaces include squash and racquetball courts, administration centre, concession rooms, and a 25m swimming pool. In addition to the major building facility upgrades and the re-orientation of the site, Cannon Design has re-planned the baseball/softball park, all-weather and natural grass soccer fields, and field support facilities. This project was phased, fast-tracked, and constructed sequentially so that the facility could remain open during the construction process. Cannon Design was the prime consultant on the project which included public consultation, planning, programming, surfacing, and a full inter-disciplinary design team coordination.
In summary, the facility areas & amenities include:
900 m Leisure Pool
25m Pool Renovations
Swirl pool, hot tub, slide
Ice Arena
Fitness Centre
Outdoor spray-park
Soccer, baseball and softball fields (reconfigured)
Squash/Racquetball Courts
Gymnasium
Sauna/Steam Room
Concessions
Multi-purpose Meeting Rooms
Administration Suite
Locker/Change/Team Rooms
Wellness Suite (with physiotherapy services)
This project began as an upgrade to an existing collection of dated and worn-out structures and additions comprising the Leisure Centre and included a new fitness facility and a complete overhaul and addition to the aquatic centre.
After investigating the site conditions and programme fit, Cannon Design determined that an existing oddly oversized meeting room could be reused as an entry lobby for a fraction of the cost of new space. Internal circulation was clarified and rationalized for efficiency. We proposed a reorientation of the entrance and vehicle access to an adjacent street which allowed for the creation of a new frontage for the facility emphasizing the new pool and fitness additions. This transformed the image of the Leisure Centre and its connection to the neighbourhood while improving parking and looped drop-off area and making better connections to existing playing fields.
