Phase 1 of Genesis Place consisted of a $9.6 million renovation and expansion of existing aquatics complex, which has greatly extended the Centre’s capacity to meet the needs of the rapidly expanding Airdrie community. A new community multipurpose hall features an indoor playground/recreation room, community lounge, multipurpose room, early-childhood centre with kitchenette and office, after-school youth centre, teaching/servery kitchen, and lounge bar. Other additions include a wellness centre with three consultation offices, reception, and community resource centre; a fitness facility with trend programming area and a day-lit, multipurpose community gymnasium. A phased schedule enabled continuous operation throughout construction.
Phase 2 consisted of a dryland sport facility indoor soccer complex with spectator seating for 300 people, complete with two fields, fitness, a 200 metre track, health suite, a gymnastics studio and locker and change rooms.
The Phase 3 project included two NHL-sized ice sheets as well as change rooms, spectator seating for 250, meeting rooms, conference room, pro shop and support and administration spaces. This phase was opened in December 2013
The challenge with this project related to the requirement to plan a multi-phase project that could be executed over a number of years, with each phase presenting a finished composition and operating in an effective manner. In addition, during the design of Phase 2 and 3, the project had to remain in full operation and serve the growing client base of the City and region. Innovative approaches to the design of the facility included the application of ultraviolet disinfection system for the pool water, which was a unique approach in the Province.
