Bermuda National Sports Centre

Role*

This 25-acre site has been carefully master-planned and developed as the new ‘heart’ of the Island. The Bermuda National Sports Centre is the focus of sport, recreation, health, entertainment and public assembly activities in Bermuda. It is truly “A Centre for All”. Includes:

 • A four-storey structure of approximately 308,750 gross square feet (referred to as the “Centre Core”); included in the Centre Core is the Main Building containing a triple gymnasium with a seating capacity of approximately 3,000 for sporting events and 3,500 to 4,000 for non-sporting events;  8-lane 51m Aquatic Complex complete with locker and change rooms.  The National Aquatic Centre was the site for the 26-nation, Nat West Island Games in July 2013.

 • The National Stadium, consisting of both open and covered (weather protected) grandstands with a total seating capacity of approximately 5,500 seats and ancillary support spaces

• A state-of-the-art natural grass sports field complex development for cricket, soccer, rugby, field hockey and other sports including a perimeter jogging/walking track and a multi-sport artificial turf surfaced field, that has been designed with an irrigation system where water is stored and recycled

 • A two-storey structure serving the fields complex area containing change room areas, lounge, concession and support spaces

 • The balance of the site development including a two-court netball area, parking areas, and hard and soft landscaping features

In addition to providing the architectural design services, we have been tasked with managing and directing all construction activities on the site. The task of building in Bermuda is challenging, as the Island is very isolated – the nearest land to Bermuda is
the US east coast, some 600 miles to the east – things such as designing drainage and watering systems in a country that has no natural fresh water proved difficult.  To successfully deliver the National Sports Centre project, Cannon Design has directly contracted the majority of construction workers, thereby eliminating the need for costly sub-contractors. This unique approach has resulted in significant cost efficiencies and schedule benefits. All project components have been delivered on-time and under-budget.
