Cardel Place (renamed to 'VIVO for Healthier Generations), a flexible, multiuse regional recreation and education centre serving the residents of rapidly growing north-central Calgary, provides a 4-lane, 25-metre pool with recreational component, fitness facilities, a three-court gymnasium, twin ice arenas, and a library, on a site adjacent to a high school. Together with a public partnership that included the City of Calgary Parks and Recreation, the Nose Creek Sport and Recreation Association, the Calgary Public Library, and the local school board, the Robert Johnston led team at Cannon Design was involved in the project from inception to completion, providing master planning, programming, design, documentation, and construction administration. Extensive consultations with the public confirmed the goal of creating an energy-efficient facility that would house public amenities in a clearly delineated and controlled environment. The facility program and conceptual design responded to these preferences, providing an appropriately high level of visibility and well-defined circulation
Particular challenges addressed in the building’s design included the harsh Calgary climate, a sloping site, and the visual impact of multiple large building components. The facility’s compact massing, extensive daylighting, and other energy-saving measures have earned Cardel Place a LEED Gold certification
